15 Oct, 2007 :: Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia

"It's like glass!" "It's like a mirror!" Doulos crew and staff were in awe of the calm and peaceful seas on the voyage from Hong Kong to East Malaysia. Just the week before a typhoon had passed through the region, and another one was predicted for the week after. But during Doulos’ four days at sea, the waters were unbelievably smooth. Those with more sea-faring experience went so far as to say it was the calmest they had ever seen the South China Sea. The good weather allowed the ship community to participate in seminars, attend orientation sessions for the coming ports, and show off their musical and theatrical skills at a talent night! Several safety drills were also conducted. The striking coastline of East Malaysia appeared on Friday morning. Mt. Kinabalu (the highest summit in Southeast Asia at 4,095 m) demanded full attention from crewmembers as the sun rose through the early morning fog. Preparations for the official opening of the book fair began immediately upon arrival in Kota Kinabalu, in anticipation of a busy weekend and a national holiday.
